wcfoodies: In 1965, a chemist at G.D. Searle & Co discovered aspartame. By 1981, aspartame was approved by the FDA and for sale under Searle’s trademarked brand name, NutraSweet. On aspartame’s shoulders, an entirely new arm of the food and drink industry was born: the…

WORKING CLASS FOODIES: What advice do you have for... →
Think of yourself as a minimalist rather than a broke student. Make your pantry your arsenal: stock it with the things you love best: maybe the only seasoning you like is salt and pepper; maybe you hate dried herbs but love ground spices. Grab a few different types of dried pastas, at least one… That was like poetry, Becca. Beautifully crafted.

Unfortunately, the bees couldn’t be saved. Here’s an explanation: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/ afbee/bee_removal.shtml rebeccalando: 10,000 bees in a keg-sized hive in my parents’ front yard. NBD. Unfortunately, they had to destroy the hive because they couldn’t tell if the bees were Africanized (i.e., dangerous) or not. There was no edible honey in the hive and with so many bees,...

BRB, gonna hang with my dad now.
rebeccalando: Some facts: This is not a Halloween costume My dad used to own a bunch of candy stores on the Gulf Coast I had to be the Jelly Belly jelly bean once or twice a year because I was the only person who fit into the costume. Everyone else was too big or too tall. I think my dad is pretty cool anyway (Yes, Max used to be blond)

Our Family's Traditional Apple Cake: A Fail-Proof...
rebeccalando: wcfoodies: What can I say about this cake? It is about as close to perfection as a fall cake can come: grown-up enough to serve for brunch, or afternoon tea, or at the end of a sophisticated dinner, but sweet enough to feel like a good and proper dessert and sate your dessert craving. The only butter in the cake is what you spread around the cake pan, and yet the cake forms a...

The Internet gets its own Food Network (Variety) →
rebeccalando: very, very awesome! I’m so proud of you! mdfsmash: moth: Variety, via the next news feed: “Next New Networks is launching [Hungry Nation] today, with a focus on food for the common man – and frugality. The company… averages 30 million views per month and approximately 15 million unique users per month… The numbers are comparable to a smaller cable network.”

– My mom, in response to this post, where the ‘swine flu’ reference was obviously facetious (or so I thought). So because I love my mom, I will not joke about my cold being swine flu anymore. Related: OH SHIT GUYS, I THINK I HAVE THE SARS. (via rebeccalando)

WAFFLE HILDEGARD BEACHBUM
rebeccalando: Today included a waffle breakfast party with about 20 people, including a girl named Panama; jumping in the riptide and trying not to drown in Sagaponack; playing Sharks & Minnows and Marco Polo in Michael’s pool with 7 other grown-ups; skateboarding; grilling dinner and eating outdoors with more friends and family; and 2 hours of ridiculous baby name suggestions with Chelsea. ...

So, the thing is...
When someone calls you up and asks you to do something that you have never, ever done before, and that you think maybe, just maybe you should do, even though you have no idea how to do it or how to fit it into your life, should you do it? Life is so untidy. It never gives you the chance to do something when it’s a good time to do it. How do you know if you should make it happen then? When...

rebeccalando: County spelling bee champ, elementary school level, Allegheny County, 1989-90 school year. Winning word: ‘apotheosis’ Successfuly completed my parole for that DUI. Third time’s the charm, baby! No, not that DUI. The one in South Beach, spring break ‘98. Lessons learned include: don’t try to ‘drink the rainbow’ in jell-o shots; ‘golf cart’ does not equal ‘free car’; you can get...

Reflections on father's day
On the one hand, I feel good that I organized a brunch outing with my dad (97), my mother (90), and my son and husband on this Father’s Day. I know how lucky I am to still have my parents, to be one of the few my age who can say their mother and father are still living independently and in relative good health. On the other hand, I am throat-slittingly depressed when I have to spend time...
